Cape Coast Castle stands as one of the most significant historical monuments in Africa. This imposing white fortress overlooking the Atlantic Ocean served as one of the largest slave-trading posts during the transatlantic slave trade. Today, it serves as a museum and memorial, offering guided tours through the dungeons where enslaved Africans were held before being shipped across the Atlantic.

History

Originally built by the Swedish in 1653, the castle changed hands multiple times between European powers before becoming the British colonial headquarters on the Gold Coast. It played a central role in the slave trade for over 200 years.
