Lake Volta

About

Lake Volta is the world's largest artificial lake by surface area, covering 8,502 square kilometers. Created by the Akosombo Dam in 1965, the lake offers stunning scenery, fishing opportunities, and boat cruises. The town of Akosombo provides access to the dam and lake activities.

History

Lake Volta was created in 1965 with the construction of the Akosombo Dam for hydroelectric power generation. The project displaced over 80,000 people and submerged 700 villages, but today provides 80% of Ghana's electricity.
